Masjid Alwi Kangar is one of the iconic symbols of Islam in the state of Perlis. The mosque was built in 1931 at a total cost of RM64,684.00.
The funds for its construction were sourced from zakat and fitrah collections, donations from Muslim government officials and merchants, as well as allocations from the State Government of Perlis.
Efforts to raise funds for the construction of a mosque in Kangar began as early as the 1920s, and the building works commenced during the service of Mr. M. C. Hay. However, the mosque was only completed in February 1933 during the tenure of Mr. O. E. Venables.
It was officially opened by the late Tuanku Syed Alwi Ibni Almarhum Tuanku Syed Safi Jamalullail on 14 Syawal 1351H, corresponding to 10 February 1933.
This beautiful mosque was named “Masjid Alwi” after the then ruler of Perlis, the late Tuanku Syed Alwi Jamalullail. Masjid Alwi was also registered as a National Heritage site under the National Heritage Act 2005 (Act 645) and was approved by Dato’ Professor Emeritus Zuraina Majid, the Heritage Commissioner (2008), under the Department of National Heritage, Ministry of Unity, Culture, Arts and Heritage of Malaysia.
To this day, Masjid Alwi remains in active use and continues to serve as one of the main mosques in Perlis. Various religious and community programmes are actively held here, such as the Weekly Lectures by the State Mufti, the Perkampungan Sunnah Programme, and many others.

Masjid Al-Hussain, Kuala Perlis is a floating mosque built near the Kuala Perlis Jetty in Perlis, Malaysia. It stands on the coast of Kuala Perlis facing the Straits of Malacca. The mosque was constructed through the contribution of a businessman, Tan Sri Mohd. Ariffin Yusuf, and was officially opened on 8 October 2011. The current imam of Masjid Al-Hussain is Mohammad Dhiya’al Hafidh Fatah Yasin.
The construction of Masjid Al-Hussain, Kuala Perlis took four (4) years to complete, with a cost of approximately RM12 million. Part of the mosque structure extends out into the Straits of Malacca.
The mosque’s architectural theme highlights a modern tropical resort concept, expressed through artistic touches in its design and the relaxed ambience of its surroundings. Interestingly, this mosque, which has become a new icon of Kuala Perlis, was inspired by the Crown Prince of Perlis, HRH Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Ibni Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail.
Ariffin’s elder brother, Datuk Dr Mohd Hussain, passed away in 1999 before fulfilling his wish to build a mosque. For that reason, once completed, the mosque was named in his honour.
To create a natural feel adapted to its coastal and maritime environment, the mosque walls were left unpainted and instead finished with materials such as coral stones, quartz, granite, marble, and pebbles. A waqf pavilion was also built in the mosque square. Worshippers and visitors can rest along the sea-facing walls. Additionally, three date palm trees imported from the Middle East add a touch of West Asian character to the mosque’s landscape.
The most distinctive external feature of Masjid Al-Hussain is its golden-yellow dome with blue motifs, reflecting the official colours of the state of Perlis.

Sunnah Nabawiyyah Centre, Perlis (Pusat Sunnah Nabawiyyah / السنة النبوية مركز) under MAIPs is located on the original site and building of the Old Arau Mosque, which was constructed during the reign of Raja Syed Ahmad Jamalullail, around the period from 1873 to 1897 AD. It was built by Arab and Malay craftsmen using bricks, wood, clay, chicken eggs, duck eggs, and various types of natural sweeteners.
During the reign of Raja Syed Saffi Jamalullail, the Old Arau Mosque was expanded to accommodate the growing number of congregants. In line with this, he also commissioned a wooden minbar (pulpit for Friday sermons) crafted in Penang. The craftsman responsible for making this minbar was Haji Abdullah Buyung, also from Penang. The minbar was completed in 1905 AD/1322 AH and was transported back to Perlis via the Tebing Tinggi River to Kangar. The minbar was later transported to Arau using a horse carriage. Today, it is almost a hundred years old and continues to be used as the minbar of the State Mosque in Arau.
During the reign of Raja Syed Alwi Jamalullail, the mosque’s veranda was extended around its perimeter. A few years later, additional structures resembling “wings” were built on the right and left sides of the mosque to further increase its capacity in order to accommodate the growing number of congregants.
In the time of Raja Syed Putra Jamalullail, the Old Arau Mosque underwent various changes. Its roof, lamps, mats, and other facilities were replaced with new ones. However, in 1973, the State Mosque was constructed at its current location to replace the Old Arau Mosque. Therefore, from that point onwards, the function of the Old Arau Mosque shifted to the new State Mosque.
During the reign of HRM Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail, the Old Arau Mosque was repurposed as a Quranic learning centre and also served as an Islamic kindergarten. Towards the end of 2016, the Perlis Islamic Religious Council and Malay Customs (MAIPs) restored the old mosque to be used once again as a centre of learning and knowledge. Thus, on 17 January 2017, HRH the Crown Prince of Perlis officiated the opening of the MAIPs Sunnah Nabawiyyah Centre and established it as a centre for the study of turath (Islamic classical heritage texts) in Perlis.
